Bitterroot River Fishing Report 5/19
Runoff is in full swing, and with chances of rain and warmer tempsthis week, river levels may take a bump. That said, the Bitterroot remains fishable, with slightly better clarity than the Clark Fork.
The West Fork is running much clearer and offers a more forgiving option compared to the mainstem. The sloughs are also fishing well—trout are sheltering in the clearer, spring-fed water.
If slogging through high-water isn’t your idea of a good time, don’t worry—tributary opener is here offering clearer water and excellent spring fishing.
Dry fly action has been decent during the evenings. Gray Drakes, BWOs, and Caddis have all been productive when fish are looking up.
Nymphing remains a reliable go-to, especially with fluctuating clarity. A double nymph rig with a Pat’s Rubber Legs paired with a worm—continues to move fish consistently.
Streamer fishing has also produced, especially on overcast days. Large, dark patterns that stand out in stained water are key. If you're hunting big browns, focus on slow, soft pockets near undercut banks.
Pike are in full spawn mode now. Look for them stacked up in the sloughs on warm days or holding in slack water near slough mouths. Many of the Bitterroot’s sloughs stay clear thanks to springs, creating prime conditions for exciting sight-fishing opportunities.
