The Bitterroot is still in a low, technical late-summer pattern, but flows have bumped up from the last report. The latest verified reading near Missoula showed 759 cfs, up from the previous 671 cfs reading, with a warm evening water temperature around 71 degrees. Even though none of this river is currently on hoot owl restriction, anglers should still treat the Bitterroot as a morning-first fishery right now. Warmer afternoons can stress trout quickly, especially on the lower river.

The best fishing will be early in the day. Focus on riffle edges, deeper green seams, tailouts, foam lines, shaded banks, side channels, and any cooler-water influence. The small bump in flow may help spread fish out a little, but this is still clear, technical water. Longer leaders, lighter tippet, careful wading, and accurate first casts will matter. Dry-dropper rigs can still be useful, but expect the better fish to reward clean drifts and smaller flies.

The prolific late spring and early summer hatches have ended, and the Bitterroot is now fully in a mid-to-late summer bug cycle. Terrestrials are becoming one of the most important food sources, especially hoppers, ants, and beetles along grassy banks, undercut edges, and shaded structure. Late-stage PMD spinners, Tricos, and caddis are the main aquatic bugs to watch now.

PMD spinner action can be good first thing in the morning on slicks, flats, slow seams, and tailouts. Tricos may bring fish up in calmer, glassy water as the morning develops. Caddis fishing can still be productive when the sun starts to set, especially around riffle edges, foam lines, and soft banks, but keep an eye on water temps before leaning too hard on the evening window.

Weather around Hamilton is hot Friday and Saturday, with a chance of spotty storms Saturday afternoon, then a cooler Sunday. Fish early, keep trout wet, and be smart during the heat.
