Blackfoot River Fishing Report 1/13

The Blackfoot River is rolling into the new year with temps barely above freezing. Expect ice jams in certain areas and pack extra clothes for those "just in case" moments you slip into the river. The wading can be tricky this time of year, so make sure to take your time moving through the water. As always, If you're planning a float trip make sure to ask about the section you'll be floating ahead of time.

Even with freezing temperatures in the forecast, these fish still need to eat. Try throwing a variation of scuds and nymphs under the indicator to coax them into feeding. Rainbow Warriors, black Perdigons, and coffee TJ Hookers are our go-to flies with a mixed variety of different colored scuds. Low and slow is the technique this time of year, so don't shy away from the splitshot. The deep eddies and tail-outs moving at a slow walking pace is where you'll find the best luck.

If you're sick of looking at your indicator floating all day, the Blackfoot has plenty of options to both swing and strip streamers. Our recommendations are black Sculpzillas, Goldies, and Chicago Overcoats on the swing or with slow deliberate strips back to you.
