Blackfoot River Fishing Report 2/16

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 2/16

The dry fly action has been fairly limited, but on warmer afternoons you can still find the occasional pod of trout keying in on midges setting up for some fun and technical headhunting when it comes together.

Nymphing continues to be the most reliable tactic. Both indicator and tightline setups are producing, as long as your flies are reaching the slower, deeper water where fish are settled into their winter holding lies. Stonefly patterns, small mayfly nymphs, Pheasant Tails, perdigons, and Rubber Legs are all consistent producers. Most trout have shifted into classic winter water on the main river deep runs, soft buckets, and defined drop-offs.

Streamer fishing has also been productive, just at a more deliberate winter tempo. As water temperatures drop, trout are still willing to chase a well-presented fly, but they favor slower retrieves and deeper presentations. Medium-sized sculpin patterns and Woolly Buggers remain dependable, with darker colors shining on overcast days. Covering full runs with a heavy sinking tip has been especially effective. Even with a slowed winter metabolism, a big streamer worked low and slow can still entice fish looking to pack on calories.
