Blackfoot River Fishing Report 3/6

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 3/6

Dry fly action has been somewhat limited, but on warmer afternoons you can still find the occasional pod of trout keying in on midges. When it comes together, it can make for some fun and technical headhunting. Spring stoneflies are also beginning to show up Capnia and Nemoura are already in the system, with Skwalas not far behind.

Nymphing continues to be the most reliable tactic. Both indicator and tightline setups are producing, as long as your flies are getting down into the slower, deeper water where fish are holding through the winter. Stonefly patterns, small mayfly nymphs, Pheasant Tails, perdigons, and Rubber Legs are all consistent producers.

Streamer fishing has also remained productive, though it requires a slower, more deliberate cold-water approach. As water temperatures drop, trout are still willing to chase a well-presented fly, but they tend to prefer slower retrieves and deeper presentations. Medium-sized sculpin patterns and Woolly Buggers have been dependable, with darker colors especially effective on overcast days. Covering full runs with a heavy sinking tip has been particularly productive. Even with a slowed winter metabolism, a big streamer worked low and slow can still entice fish looking to pack on calories.
