Bitterroot River Fishing Report 8/4

Hoot Owl:

The Bitterroot River is now under Hoot Owl restrictions from the confluence of the East and West Fork to its confluence with the Clark Fork River. The river is closed from 2 P.M. to midnight. As always, please keep all caught fish wet and make all atempts to release as quickly as possible.

Dry Fly Bite:
Caddis, hoppers, and Tricos are popping throughout the river, with caddis showing up mid-morning. Fish are rising confidently to well-placed Hoppers, GT Adult Tricos, and classic Elk Hair Caddis. Look for surface action in everything from fast riffles to slow slicks and soft edges.

Nymphing:
While nymphing can still get results, most subsurface fish are hunkered down. We suggest focusing on the dry fly bite whenever possible.

Streamers:
Streamer action has been fair. Target undercut banks, log jams, and bouldery structure where fish are holding tight. Copper Kreelex streamers and sculpin patterns in olive or black are your best bet for moving bigger trout.

Note on Conditions:
The Bitterroot has seen extremely warm temps this summer, peaking at 77°F. We strongly recommend hitting a cooler river or getting on the water early to minimize stress on the fish and give them a much-needed break.
