Bitterroot River Fishing Report 5/29

The Bitterroot River is flowing exceptionaly high and muddy right now. These high temperture have brought down the last of the snowpack in the mountains. This drops the river temperture and skyrockets the CFS. Everyone who's out on the water this weekend, be careful.

PMD's have just started to come off on the lower Bitterroot followed by the start of the salmonflies slow ascent. In the late evenings, caddis will still blanket the entire scene. Despite the heavy flows and cold water, there is still room for exceptional dry fly fishing up the entirety of the river. Try different variations of Cornfed Caddis, Quigley's Crippled PMD, and the Flutter Bug as a way to coax those heavy hitters out from the log jams.

As tired as we all are of watching a bobber, You can always get results on nymph rigs. Even a worm or Pheasant tail under a salmonfly would be extremely productive this time of year. If you really are willing to cast a double nymph: Large brown Pat's Rubber Legs with purple prince nymphs have been reported to be working right now. If all else fails, use a TJ Hooker in coffee with the tried and true San Juan Worm underneath for results.

Streamers are the local favorite for the Bitterroot this time of year. Most people trade the delicate micro buggers and muddler minnows for something with a little less... finesse. After all, whats more fun than throwing large Dungeons in white and tan, or better yet, Yellow Gongas to our butter colored fresh water sharks. Tired of that action? Try the Yard Sale in rainbow or black, or even a D&D in pearl behind a logjam.
