Blackfoot River Fishing Report 5/5
Happy high-water everyone! The water is muddy and blasting, and with the chance of rain through the week, the Blackfoot river dosn't look like it's going to even out anytime soon! The river is already tripple the the size it was this time last year.
We are only two weeks out from tributary opener, meaning only two weeks before we can all spread out to find some smaller and cleaner water. Until then though, we have to make do with the current conditions on the main rivers.
Despite some of the higher flows and muddier water, the fish are still eating pretty consistantly. Trying to coax them up to a dry fly might be a little harder with the current clarity, you can usually find a dry eating trout a little into the afternoon. We suggest some darker colored Water Walker, or even smaller Chubby Chernobyls.
With these kind of conditions, nymphs are ideal. Despite how you might feel about the subject: San Juan Worms are your best bet in these muddier waters. Pair one of those with a large, dark colored Pat's Rubber legs and you have a recipe for trout catching. If you're opposed to fisihing that combination, larger Hares Eares and Double Beaded Stones should work perfectly well too.
This time of year a streamer is a great option also! Larger, dark, streamers present a better silhouette for fish to find, especially on the dark rainy days we'll see scattered through the week. Black Dungeons and Double Gongas will work perfeclty for these rainy May floats through the canyon.
