Blackfoot River Fishing Report 6/18
The Blackfoot river is experiencing the majority of it's hatches about two weeks early than the status quo. Salmonflies are all but done with golden stones about halfway up the river. The fish will still be keyed into larger foam flies, but will tend to be a bit pickier due to the pressure on the river up to this point. The water is rapidly receding and we'll be looking at higher water temps if the rain and cooler nights don't stabalize everything by the end of the week.
While the water is good, the dry fly bite is on! Goldens are still the key bug right now, with green drakes following right behind. Size 10 golden Water Walkers have seemed to work great this past week with an Extended Body Green Drake collecting even the pickiest of eaters.
Any kind of large stone nymph under a chubby or other floating indicator seems to do the trick with the subsurface bite. These trout are still eating heavily under the surface in the mornings and will hang out in a feeding line all day if the sun stays behind the clouds. Large Pat's Rubber Legs or a Jigged Pheasant tail is still the go too. The tried and tru black Perdigon isn't a bad selection either.
If the weather's right, Streamers and the Blackfoot are synonymis this time of year with large brown trout. Sculpins and baitfish are darting around the boulders seeking cover while large crawfish are bouncing off the bottom trying to avoid being that nights dinner. If there's any kind of cloud cover, we recomend JJ Specials, Goldies, and Yellow Gongas to any fisherman who dream of large trout attacking large streamers.
