Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/16

The Blackfoot cooled off a bit yesterday, giving us a brief reprieve, but temperatures are set to climb again as the week goes on. Hoot Owl restrictions are looking increasingly likely in the coming days. Be sure to stay updated on current regulations to fish both legally and responsibly.

Flows are low for this time of year, but the dry fly bite is still holding strong. Evenings and mornings are alive with caddis, spruce moths, and nocturnal stoneflies, though some fish may need a little extra encouragement to rise in the warmer parts of the day. That said, the healthier ones are still looking up.

While nymphing has been productive, we recommend staying focused on dry fly fishing whenever possible. With fish dropping into deeper holding water to escape the heat, a short-leash setup with a Frenchie or jigged Pheasant Tail under a foam dry like a Chubby can be a deadly combo when they’re not rising outright.

Streamers have been straightforward with the clear skies and sun—go flashy. Sparkle Minnows have been our top producer for big browns and rainbows, with Kreelex patterns a close second. Anything with strong flash and body will turn heads right now. Fish them high in the water column on a floating line to target active fish cruising for a meal.
