Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/2

The Blackfoot River hit 70 degrees for the first time yesterday. Hoot-Owl restrictions are looking highly likely by the end of the week. Keep a lookout on current river restrictions so as to keep a legal and ethical approach to the rivers this week.

The water is low for this time of year, but dry flies are still happening! Caddis are everywhere in the evenings and nocturnal stones are coming off late into the night. Some of these fish need a little coaxing to the surface due to temperature rise, but healthy ones are still looking up.

Nymphs on long leaders are the way to go if you're searching those deep pools. These fish are sitting much lower in the water to avoid these recent high sun days, and sometime they wont move unless a well placed nymph is drifted by them. Frenchies or jigged Pheasant Tails of any size work great this time of year.

Streamers are pretty simple with all this sun: throw something flashy. Sparkle minnows are the way to any large brown or rainbows heart up the blackfoot this year, with a Kreelex being our second choice. Anything that will keep the a trouts attention with large amounts of flash and body.
