Clark Fork River Fishing Report 6/17
The Clark fork has been fishing exceptionaly well for this time of year while also not experiencing the same number of boats you'd see up the blackfoot. The upper Clark is fishing especially well, while the head hunting through the lower end is just starting to pick up.
Dry flies are blanketing the Clark Fork from end to end. Salmon flies are all but done with yellow sallies, green drakes, golden stones, and PMD's all being sighted and confirmed from drummoned down. The fish are especially active and prone to be fooled on the surface early in the morning while the hatches just start; Right before the sun directly hits the water. Caddis are in full swing too, and will be the prominent hatch until the middle of august. Anglers have been seeing high success with large Elk Hair Caddis, Outrigger Yellow Sallys, and variations of smaller Chubbies.
In the very early mornings a lot of these trout are still gorging themselves on the large stonefly nymphs. Large Golden TJ's and blonde Deep Cleaners were working great the other day. They will key into the mayfly also, especially in the morning with PMD hatches and green drakes a little later. Frenchies and jigged Pheasant Tails have been working great.
Streamers are a must anywhere on the Clark Fork, with the largest brown trout still chasing juvenile whitefish. Large white streamers on bright days and dark and olive streamers on the cloudier days as usual. The Goldie and a Peanut Envy in either natural/tan or olive would work great while working those undercut banks.
There's the potential for a cold front to occur later this week, bringing in lots of rain and hopefuly a spike in water. Be prepared for a drop in temperatures and the potential of thunderheads.
