Clark Fork River Fishing Report 7/2

Clark Fork River Fishing Report 7/2

The Clark Fork has been fishing well for this time of year. However the water temps are heating up hitting 72 degrees above Missoula yesterday. This means that Hoot owl restrictions may be on the way. As anglers we must be concious about temps as we are fishing, bring a thermometer with you and check temps consistantly.

Dry flies are thick from Drummond downstream. Yellow sallies, green drakes, golden stones, caddis, and PMDs are all active across the system. Caddis are out in force and should remain the dominant hatch well into August. Large Elk Hair Caddis, Outrigger Yellow Sallies, and smaller Chubby variations have all been effective.

Subsurface, trout are still feeding heavily in the early mornings. Large stonefly nymphs like Golden TJs have been getting plenty of attention. Mayfly nymphs are also in play, especially around the morning PMD hatches and mid-morning green drakes. Frenchies and jigged Pheasant Tails have been excellent choices.

But as the water heats up the fish will glue to the bottom for some rest so we recommend sticking to the dry game and leaving those resting fish alone.

Streamer fishing remains a strong option throughout the river. Big browns are still chasing juvenile fish, so large bright streamers are a solid bet on bright days, with darker or olive patterns better under cloud cover. The Goldie and Peanut Envy (in tan, natural, or olive) are both excellent choices for working those deep banks and soft edges.

Again we cant stress enough the importants of checking temps throughout the day to protect our fish and rivers.
