Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/13/26
Message from FWP as of 6-25-26:
ATTENTION FLOATERS: Advised to unload and walk your boat through "The Strainer Tree Area" approxamitley 1 mile below Harry Morgan campground - rough coordinates 46.98791, -113.11272. There have been numerous accidents in this area in the last few weeks including hung up boats on strainers. Be very aware, keep your hands on the oars, and be vigilant.
The Blackfoot is dropping into a lower, clearer summer flow. The Bonner gauge is around 1,500 cfs, down from the last report, and water temperatures are warming into the upper 60s during the day. The river is still fishing well, but the best windows are shifting earlier and later as the afternoons heat up.
Target banks, willow lines, inside seams, riffle edges, buckets, soft pockets, and slower shelves below heavier water. Fish are still looking up, but a dry-dropper rig is the most reliable way to cover water. A Golden Stone, Chubby, or Water Walker with a PMD nymph, caddis pupa, Perdigon, or small jig underneath will fish well through soft banks and pocket water.
Golden Stones remain a good searching bug, but the daily hatch activity is shifting toward PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis. PMD spinner dry-fly action is worth watching in the evening, especially in slower slicks, foam lines, tailouts, and softer riffle edges. Fish feeding on spinners can be subtle, so slow down and look carefully before charging into good water.
Evening caddis fishing should be very important right now. When the sun starts to drop, fish may slide into shallower banks, riffle edges, and softer seams. Small caddis dries can produce well when the day has been bright and hot.
Weather near Bonner is warm and unsettled at times. Expect a cloudy, warm Monday, a cooler Tuesday with a stray afternoon thundershower, partly sunny weather Wednesday, and more thunderstorm chances Thursday and Friday. Fish early, be careful with fish handling in the heat, and keep an eye on afternoon water temperatures.
