Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/2/26

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/2/26

Message from FWP as of 6-25-26:

ATTENTION FLOATERS: Advised to unload and walk your boat through "The Strainer Tree Area" approxamitley 1 mile below Harry Morgan campground - rough coordinates 46.98791, -113.11272. There have been numerous accidents in this area in the last few weeks including hung up boats on strainers. Be very aware, keep your hands on the oars, and be vigilant.

The Blackfoot also saw some influence from the weekend rain and is running a little fuller than it was during the lower, clearer stretch. It is still in a very fishable summer range, but anglers should expect stronger current, a little more push along the banks, and some potential color depending on the section. The river has enough water to keep fish comfortable, and if clarity holds, fishing should remain good.

Golden Stones are now the main big-bug focus. Salmonflies are done and gone in most places, though a few leftovers may still be around in canyon water and higher sections. PMDs, Yellow Sallies, caddis, and Green Drakes are also in the mix. Dry-dropper rigs are a strong choice right now, especially along banks, willow lines, buckets, and soft riffle edges. A larger Golden Stone or Chubby on top with a stonefly nymph, caddis pupa, or PMD nymph underneath will cover water well.

The best water will be soft inside seams, bank edges, willow lines, buckets, slower riffle edges, and shelves below faster water. If the river has color, nymphs and streamers will be more consistent. During cloudy periods, fish may be more willing to move for bigger dries or chase a streamer.

Weather near Bonner looks warm heading into the weekend, with a chance of afternoon thundershowers Friday, mostly sunny weather Saturday and Sunday, and another spotty storm chance early next week. July 4th weekend will bring a lot of tubers, rafters, anglers, and general recreation traffic. Fish early, be patient at accesses, and expect the quietest fishing before the crowds build.
